The government of Tamil Nadu state in India said on Thursday that it is considering the permanent closure of the local Vedanta’s large copper smelter.
Sandeep Nanduri, the highest-ranking official in the region where the smelter is located, said that “the government’s position is very clear and does not want the smelter to be operational again”. Officials in other parts of India also confirmed this news. Earlier, the local government had cut off the power supply to the smelter. The pollution control committee of Tamil Nadu state also stated that the smelter was found last week with the intention to resume production without official permission.
In the area where the smelter was located, mass demonstrations broke out on Tuesday and there was a clash with the local police. The current statistics have resulted in 13 deaths.Titanium electroplate CNC milling part Supplier
The copper smelter is the largest copper smelter in India with an annual production of 400,000 tons. In recent months, local residents and environmentalists have continued to protest against the smelter’s pollution damage to the local environment and fisheries. As of now, the copper smelter has been forced to close more than 50 days.
