Korea Materials Research Institute Successfully Developed A New Aluminum Powder Surface Treatment Technology

Pure aluminum and oxygen combined, compared with other materials, oxidation reaction speed block, the heat is also very high. The United States, Russia and other countries rely on the intense oxidation reaction of aluminum powder, which is widely used in aviation, civil and defense industry as rocket propellant, gunpowder and welding material. Only when the surface is dense and solid oxide film is completely removed, the excellent oxidation reactivity and conductivity of aluminum powder and other properties to fully play out, which requires at least 1000 ℃ heat. In order to solve these problems, the research team at the Materials Research Institute tried to easily remove the oxide film formed on the surface and used fluorine-containing organic substances to improve the stability and reactivity of the aluminum powder itself. The coated aluminum powder can remove the organic coating at a temperature below 250 ° C., and the reaction speed can be increased by at least 2 times compared with the aluminum powder of the same size containing the oxide film. In the future, this technology will help improve the oxidative reactivity of aluminum powder, which can be used as solid fuel material and brazing raw material for rocket launch by artificial satellites. Combined with organic bonding and mixing technology, it can be used as a wide variety of electronic components and highly conductive metal solder materials, including photovoltaic cells, which is expected to enhance the added value of aluminum powder to replace imported powder material.


Kim Jong-tai, head of the research team, said that if the technology is commercially available, aluminum powder can create tremendous value in the defense and electronic parts industries and will play a huge role in the development of Korean materials and technology.
