American Researchers To Improve The Five-axis Machine Tool To Improve Processing And Milling Process Accuracy

The five-axis machine is a numerical control (CNC) machine that transfers, cuts and mills parts on five different axes simultaneously. The machine allows manufacturers to create complex contours or curves while creating large parts such as wings.


As everyone knows, there are 41 basic geometric errors in a five-axis machine, and researchers say the actual way that a machine moves (in the case of large parts) may not be the same as expected, given the inherent geometric errors. Due to these errors, the manufacturer must make adjustments when calibrating the CNC machine.


There are a number of ways to deal with this type of error so far, but no single method can provide a complete picture, the researchers said. Therefore, the researchers hope to find a way to eliminate trivial methods and develop a new model that automatically generates error compensation tables while capturing complex geometric errors. This compensation table is a map of errors that can be programmed in a CNC machine to reduce errors.


Due to the large size of the parts, the mounting defects of large parts may seem insignificant but may cause serious problems. For example, the length of an aircraft part can be 120 feet and its size can cause problems with tight tolerances, the researchers said. In a five-axis machine tool study, researchers attempted to keep the error of more than 120 feet of parts at five parts per inch.


The project researchers also worked with researchers at Boeing Research and Technology in St. Louis to use laser trackers to quickly measure all axis movements in the entire work area of an industrial five-axis machine.
